An extremely rare and unusual mint error
Lot 1642
Cn. Lentulus Clodianus, 88 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.91 g, 2 h), brockage mint error, Rome. Helmeted bust of Mars to right, seen from behind, wearing balteus, holding parazonium over his right shoulder and vertical spear over his left. Rev. [CN•]ENTVL Victory driving fast biga to left, holding wreath in her right hand and reins in her left (all incuse and reversed). Babelon (Cornelia) 1. Crawford 345/1. RBW 1312. Sydenham 702. An extremely rare and unusual mint error. Very fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.

This is a highly unusual brockage mint error, as it does not bear the typical impression of the obverse of the previously struck coin, but rather its reverse - indicating that the coin had flipped over before becoming lodged in the die. As a result, while the coin displays its correct reverse type, it appears incuse and mirrored.
